ABOUT WBEA
Texas Women-Owned Businesses Gaining Ground

- There are an estimated 776,283 privately held 50% or more women-owned firms in Texas, accounting for 38.7% of all privately held firms in the state.

- These firms generate more than $131 billion in sales and employ 971,909 people.

- “Between 1997 and 2006, the performance of majority women-owned firms outpaced the economy as a whole,” said Marjorie Alfus, Center for Women’s Business Research.

- Drawing on the most recent Census data, the Center for Women’s Business Research projects 2006 statistics for privately held women-owned businesses for all 50 states.  The report revealed impressive growth and substantial economic contributions women entrepreneurs are making across the country.

The top 10 states for majority women-owned businesses are, in order:

  1. California
  2. New York
  3. Texas
  4. Florida
  5. Illinois
  6. Pennsylvania
  7. Ohio
  8. New Jersey
  9. Michigan
  10. Georgia

The rank is based on a combination of the number of firms, sales and employees.
